Burlesque Hall of Fame (BHOF)

BHOF (Burlesque Hall of Fame) is a burlesque festival held in Las Vegas each year to present the best of talent. I had an incredible opportunity to photograph one of these talents, Mercury Stardust! I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Mercury's promo images for his upcoming performance in this years BHOF! The best part of all of this is that each year only FIVE male performers are accepted to perform at the festival to which Mercury was accepted! One thing to expect from a burlesque photo session is...

No time for peace.

Once everything is motionless, time loosens its grip. Time can not master such stillness. To intake this view doesn't take a second or a minute for time has bowed out. I found myself unable to fully absorb this scene as I stood there for...

Gotta Go!

Recently I had some fun with a photoshoot meetup at a local Casino/Hotel. While others were playing with their new photo-toys, Tetra and I went on a walk around the casino to find good spaces to shoot. Okay, so we ended up in the men's bathroom. This was my idea for when I went to use the bathroom I realized it was one of the coolest spaces to shoot in...and risky! The only way in and out of this men's restroom was a 20' long hallway! Hey, adventure! After I fumbled my settings to get exposure correct, we started shooting. Not even 10 shots in a man starts to walk down the men's restroom hallway. There was nowhere for us to go! Tetra, being a step ahead of me jumped into a stall. She closed and locked the door, sat on the toilet, held her feet up for her legs/shoes wouldn't show. Genious! Now, WTF do *I* do?! That's right, texting. I set my camera and bag on the sink and acted like I'm texting. The man starts to use the urinal. Besides the obvious sounds, a lady starts talking from the walkie-talkie attached to the man's belt.... *pssssh*  "Hey Terry, did you take care of that....." Of COURSE, it was an employee!!! He finished his business and walk back out. HOLY *WHEW*! We didn't get caught! Yay!   We ventured a few other areas. A stairwell... ...and a killer hallway... Thank you, Tetra, for a fun second shoot! (Our first shoot together is here, if you missed it--->"Infinite Ribbons")

Detroit wished me a happy birthday

img_6366-edit-edit-copy This past weekend was my birthday weekend. Me and the lady set out to visit the city Ann Arbor in Michigan. We drove about 5 or 6 hours before we arrived to Ann Arbor and unbeknownst to us there was football game about to start. There was no where to park for under $30. People dressed in football stamped clothing were covering the sunlight from touching any ground.. Painted faces and all. Since we are not into sports, in the slightest bit, we decided to not stop in this city. Since neither of us have been to Detroit, and it was so close by, that is where we headed.

This shoot is HOT!

But for real, it was terrible hot outside when making these images! This was my first time working with Kayla and I could not  ask for an easier time shooting. We clicked and had good flow right from the start. Only a single reflector for all shots.untitled shoot-235-Edit Read on...

Queens and Kings

IMG_3734_2 Hello readers! I had a great shoot with Shayra and Tristan this February and I'm excited to share it here today! I will have some BTS (Behind The Scenes) shots mixed in along with lighting diagrams to help you understand what was going on with the on-set lighting. Come on in and let see what's going on!

Here are the lighting essentials for this image...

  • These table lights are not very bright; so we will have a slow shutter speed. Break out the tripod for the sharpest image! (see me in the BTS image below!)
  • Meter the camera to the table lights. This ended up being 1/15th of a second shutter speed.
  • Place and turn on the strobe light; meter this light against the table lamps. (ask in the comments more about this step!)
  • And most importantly, we must be setup with a rear-shutter sync for the sharpest image!
  • SHOOT! 😀

"Our eyes and mind see different things. To bridge the gap between the two one can use cameras and lights."

 -Joshua Berardi
This BTS image captures the above quote completely. Did I just quote myself? Well, yes. Yes I did! That makes referencing a whole lot easier! 🙂

I titled this post "Queens and Kings"  due to this image. I felt like I was shooting royalty! (It's the hair piece really!)

This image has the exact same setup as the first image at the top with the lighting diagram.

  • This setup was done exactly like the first diagram except for one difference...
  • I used a 3409 CTO (change-to-orange) gel in front of the flash tube for my strobe light color would closely match that of the background.
  • Without the CTO gel we would run into a warm background while our clients would come off looking blue/green in comparison.
Here is a BTS of what I was seeing during this portion of the shoot. Again, bridging that gap between what I want to see and what actually is. A HUGE shout out to my lady Michelle for being a really awesome grip during our shoots! She rocks with posing, working with clients, lighting, and juggling equipment around me. You may have seen her on my blog here, here, or even here. :)sA
